Discount + Specificity Closes; Vague Offers Don't

We ran 5 cold calls this week selling home exterior work. Two booked meetings. Three hit Follow Up Required. The difference wasn't charm or luck. It was discount strategy paired with one detail reps either nailed or skipped.
Every rep led with a 40% discount. That part was consistent. But the discount closed only when paired with a specific project size. When reps said "5 windows" or "10 old windows," prospects moved to meetings. When the discount floated without a number, we got a callback promise instead.
Take Quentin Baylor. Sal reached him about a previous window quote. He confirmed he hadn't replaced them yet and agreed to a free updated quote with the 40% discount. The key: Sal quantified it immediately. "5 windows. Tomorrow 1:00 PM to inspect." Meeting booked. 230 seconds.
Janice Dodd followed the same path. Sal pitched the discount valid for one year. Janice had budget concerns until Sal anchored to her actual situation: "10 old windows. Sole homeowner." That specificity locked the meeting for tomorrow at 10:30 AM. 554 seconds of conversation, but it converted.
Now the misses. Margarita Campos expressed interest in a front door replacement but wasn't ready until next year. No discount mentioned. No meeting. No specific timeline. Follow Up Required.
Theresa Clark had specificity going for her. Sal quantified it: "10-15 drafty windows." She confirmed the details. But she couldn't book because her husband is in Fayetteville and she needed his input. Sal will call back. Good data, zero close.
Lori Bennett's call went the longest direction without landing anything. Sal offered siding, gutters, and windows quotes. Interest was there. But no decision-maker commitment upfront. Her husband exists. Her work schedule blocks evenings. Sal will follow up. 363 seconds, FU Required.
Here's what we learned: Discounts prime the pump. Specificity closes it.
A 40% discount means something to a homeowner sitting with quote anxiety. But a homeowner asked "Want a siding discount?" hasn't mentally moved past "maybe someday." That same homeowner asked "Want 40% off 5 windows we can install tomorrow?" has already visualized the work and the price. He sees the deal.
The discount creates urgency. The specifics create believability. Together they create a meeting.
We see reps defaulting to one or the other. A discount with "exterior work" is too vague to act on. Specific project numbers without a price anchor feels like a sales call with no offer. But anchor the discount to a quantified scope and a confirmed timeline, and you move past Follow Up to closed booking.
For other teams running similar campaigns: don't rely on the discount to do the work alone. Quantify before you pitch. Know the house. Know the scope. Know who decides. Then pair the offer to the specific project. That's when cold calls move.
